PITTSBURGH NON-PROFIT AWARDED $95,000 TO SUPPORT FAMILIES OF CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL HEALTH CARE NEEDS

PITTSBURGH, PA – Families who have children with special health care needs will continue to receive support and training through a grant by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. More than $95,000 has been awarded to the Parent Education & Advocacy Leadership (PEAL) Center in Pittsburgh to support information sharing, education and outreach across Pennsylvania.

The PEAL Center is one of 51 Family-to-Family (F2F) Health Information Centers across the nation, representing PA. The PEAL Center F2F Coordinator is Joan Badger, who has a daughter with complex health care needs. Badger manages several workshops including trainings on Medical Assistance, CHIP and Waivers. She is the leader of the Parent Leadership Institute, a program that helps parents develop an understanding of public healthcare and disability polices. Badger and the PEAL Center provide one-to-one technical assistance to parents and families regarding disability and healthcare systems.

Since the program’s inception, F2F Health Information Centers have served hundreds of thousands of families and health care providers. Over 400,000 providers and other professionals were able to benefit from their services, making invaluable information regarding the needs of these children more widely available than ever before.
