Just Say No: To Exclusionary Discipline Practices in the Early Childhood Classroom: Addressing Challenging Behavior using Positive and Supportive Interventions
December 14th,12:00 PM to 1:00 PM
Join this presentation to learn more about the harmful effects of the use of exclusionary discipline (suspension, expulsion, shortened day) with young children and alternative approaches for the use of positive practices that ensure children are included and engaged in learning with their peers. Lise Fox, of the National Center for Pyramid Model Innovations, will provide families with information on the importance of ensuring that young children do not get pushed out of the classroom, even when behavior is challenging and provide resources for strategies to address challenging behavior in ways that ensure the child is successful and included.
Learning Objectives
- Participants will identify the harmful effects of the use of exclusionary discipline practices on young children with disabilities and their peers.
- Participants will identify alternatives to the exclusionary discipline practices (e.g., sending child home early, time with a different teacher, suspension) and resources that can be used in behavior support planning for young children.
