Private Schools & Special Placements

Not all parents choose to have their children with disabilities attend traditional public schools. Today, more than ever, parents have a variety of schooling options from which to choose including but not limited to charter schools, cyber schools, parochial schools, and home schooling.

These schooling options may meet specific needs of the families however; children with disabilities who attend non-traditional schools ⃰ are not afforded the same procedural safeguards under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act or IDEA.

IDEA guarantees children with disabilities a free, appropriate, public education (FAPE), in the least restrictive environment (LRE), and an individualized education program (IEP).

Your Child, Your Choice, provides training and information to parents who have selected nontraditional schools about supporting their children’s education regardless of the school setting especially around LRE and inclusion.

*Charter schools are considered public schools which mean that all provisions of IDEA do apply to the children who attend those schools.
